Your HP Laptop Battery OptionsComputer giant Hewlett-Packard Company is recalling 135,000 battery packs worldwide for some of its Pavilion and Presario range of laptop computers, including about 2,700 across the Asia-Pacific. The defective batteries - made by a third-party supplier - tend to overheat and could pose a fire hazard. 'The estimated impacted battery shipments to Asia-Pacific are 2 per cent of the total worldwide replacement programme,' an HP spokeswoman said. HP received 16 reports of batteries overheating and four cases of minor property damage were reported in the US. 'No injuries have been reported. This property damage was isolated to either the notebook or the battery pack in question,' HP said. The batteries affected in Asia-Pacific are on these HP laptop models: Pavilion zv5000-nc6000, Pavilion ze5000-nc/nw8000, Pavilion ze4000-nx5000, Presario R3000-nx9000, Presario 2100-nx9005, Presario 2500-nx9100/nx9010. Also, the demand for the Linux-based laptop personal computers made by Hewlett-Packard has been " overwhelming" on the Thai market, according to online edition of PC World. The laptop computers, priced at 468 US dollars, come equipped with an 800-MHz processor from Via Technologies, 128MB of RAM, a 20GB hard drive, and a Linux operating system. They also have two USB ports, speakers, a built-in modem, an Ethernet port, and a 10. 4 inch thin film transistor screen. HP began selling those laptops as part of a Thai government-led initiative to give the public access to affordable computers. The Thai government set the brand name, price and feature requirements of the laptops. Local press reported that over 19,300 computers were booked on the first day of the program. The Bangkok Post said in its online edition last week that demand was so high that the Thai government feared that HP could not keep up with the orders. Another Thai newspaper even said that Dell Computer Thailand and the Association of Thai Computer Manufacturers could be in line to pick up production. HP declined to say exactly how many of the computers it is producing, adding that it is still in talks with directors of the Thai government sponsored program. HP said the laptops can also be bundled with an HP Deskjet 3325 printer valued at about 72 dollars. |
